fall already

you dance in oil
you court fire
burning, sucking
life from those
who love, who care
who want nothing more
than to see you fall

flat on your face
tiptoeing the edge
isn’t your style
you plunge head first
diving into dungeons
where you spin in circles
banging on windows
screaming to winds
draining the blood
so no one will help

no one will want
that unbearable torture
find pleasure in finding
what you’ve done wrong
consequence lies
you do too
own the faults, say
in the solace of a cell
for longer than a day

why don’t you fall already
and stay down so you can
know the pain inflicted
on not just you
your personal grave
enjoy those white walls
because one day
no one will be there
to catch you when you finally fall

dissatisfied storms

rain drops on leaves
toes stinging cold
walking through fast
trying to skate
over fallen puddles
hands dangle numb
grip them tight
in dehydrating air
biting with frozen teeth
especially in a breeze
thunder can’t rattle
lightning never lights
the darkened skies
clouds to cover
and umbrellas hold
dissatisfied storms
or a bout of autumn
turning to winter

that’s how I know it’s fall

The pumpkins are out
in full force right inside
my Starbucks coffee cup.
That’s how I know it’s fall.

Happy tears nearly took me
this morning as I drove to work
as I marveled at Utah’s beauty
and supped on my coffee.

Despite being a summer bunny,
there really is something to be said
about the glow and colors of autumn
and the prospect of days cooling.

Pumpkin spice marks it all.
As soon as it hits coffee shops,
and you savor every little sip,
glancing around at yellow leaves
and feeling goosebumps prickle
as you emerge out into the day…
you know fall has arrived.
